Best time to visit Salalah
Two Salalahs: green and misty late June–September (khareef), warm and sunny October–April. Weather, crowds and prices by month, and when to book a car.
Two seasons explained (khareef vs winter) with a 12-month table
Salalah has two seasons that could belong to different countries. From late June to September the khareef monsoon puts the mountains under cloud, drops the temperature to the low twenties and turns Dhofar green. From October to April the cloud goes, the sea calms and the coast becomes a warm dry beach destination with a desert behind it. May and early June are the hot, humid gap between them.
| Month | Weather on the coast | Sea | Hills | Crowds | Car note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 27°C, dry | Calm, 25°C | Brown | Low after 3 Jan | Best desert month; 4x4 for the sands |
| February | 28°C, dry | Calm, 25°C | Brown | Moderate, charters | Beach month; any car |
| March | 30°C, dry | Calm, 26°C | Brown | High over Eid al-Fitr | 7-seaters go first for Eid |
| April | 32°C, dry | Warming, 28°C | Brown | Low | Last comfortable inland month |
| May | 33°C, humid | Warm, 29°C | Brown | High over Eid al-Adha | Coast only; desert too hot |

| July | 28°C, drizzle, fog | Rough, no swimming | Green | High | Any car on tarmac; lights on |
| August | 27°C, drizzle, fog | Rough, no swimming | Greenest | Peak | Request weeks ahead |

Khareef (21 Jun–21 Sep): who it is for
Khareef is for people who want to see a desert country turned green and for Gulf families escaping 45°C at home. It is cool, wet and crowded, with over a million visitors in a normal season and more than half of them in August. You come for Wadi Darbat's waterfalls, the fog on the Ittin road, the Jebel Samhan viewpoint above the cloud and the blowholes at Mughsail. You do not come to swim; the sea is dangerous and the beaches are closed. Our khareef rates apply from 15 June to 15 September and the minimum rental is 4 days.
Winter (Oct–Apr): who it is for
Winter is for beach and desert travellers, for the Oman round trip from Muscat, and for the European and Russian charter guests who arrive on direct flights between October and May. The sea is calm and warm, the sky is clear, and the Empty Quarter, Fazayah and the Samhan tracks are open. The hills are brown. Winter rates apply, the minimum rental is 4 days, and a Salalah pickup needs 72 hours' notice if your car has to be brought down from Muscat, with the positioning fee shown on your quote.
Shoulder months (May Eid, October)
May is hot and humid on the coast, with the sea at its warmest; it would be quiet were it not for Eid al-Adha, which falls in May from 2026 to 2028 and brings a week of full flights and full resorts. October is the reverse: the first dry month, the hills still faintly green in the first week, swimming back, and the opening of the charter season. Both months are on the winter rate.
Prices and availability by month (cars and hotels)
Our daily rates have two levels: khareef from 15 June to 15 September, and winter for the rest of the year. The live rate for your dates is shown before you request, with 5% VAT as a separate line. What varies more than the rate is availability:
- Tightest: August, the Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr weeks, and 20 December to 2 January. Request as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Comfortable: late September to early December, January after the 3rd, February midweek, April.
- Hotels follow the same curve, with the resorts at Hawana and along Al Baleed at their fullest in August and the Christmas fortnight.
Whatever the month, the deposit is OMR 100, Basic cover is included with an excess of OMR 150, and requesting a car needs no card.
FAQ
From late July to early October. The khareef cloud arrives in the second half of June, the grass comes through in July and the mountains are at their greenest in August and the first half of September. The colour fades through October and is gone by late November. For the rest of the year, November to June, the hills are brown and the coast is dry and clear.
Yes, for beaches, heritage sites and the desert. December is about 28°C by day and 19°C at night with almost no rain, and the sea is calm at about 26°C. The hills are brown, not green. The last ten days of the month are the busiest of the winter because of the UAE and Omani school holidays, so request your car early for those dates.
On the coast, May and early June, at about 33°C with high humidity before the monsoon arrives. The khareef then drops July and August to about 27 to 28°C, which is why Gulf families come. Inland the picture is different: Thumrait and the Empty Quarter are hottest from June to August, well above 40°C, and the desert is a winter-only trip.
Oman's official khareef tourism season runs from 21 June to 21 September. Our khareef rates apply to any rental between 15 June and 15 September. The cloud and drizzle settle in from late June, the hills are green from late July and the peak for visitors is August. The waterfalls at Wadi Darbat usually run from late July into September.
For August, as soon as your dates are fixed, ideally two to three months ahead; 7-seaters are the first to go and more than half the season's visitors arrive in that one month. For late June, July and September, a few weeks is usually enough. Requesting costs nothing and needs no card; we confirm the car, then place a hold.
